Our History
Austin Discovery School was envisioned by a group of parents, educators, and an educational psychologist who were brought together through their common interest at Children’s Discovery Center in Austin. Each saw the needs of many children and parents who were growing frustrated in their search for a school that would excite children about learning and empower them to become lifelong learners.
Pooling their experience and research in child and brain development, educational theory, and child-centered curriculum, they applied for a charter in 2004 from the Texas Education Agency. In 2005, ADS opened its doors to 160 students in Kindergarten through fourth grade, and added fifth grade the next year. Currently, Austin Discovery School serves 230 students in Kindergarten through 6th grade.
Philosophy & Instruction
At the heart of Austin Discovery School’s philosophy is the belief that education should prepare students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally in an ever-changing world. Our instructional practices are rooted in inclusivity, flexibility, and whole-child development. We prioritize social-emotional learning through Conscious Discipline and Restorative Practices, creating a safe and supportive environment where students can be their authentic selves.
Our ecowellness focus connects students to the natural world, encouraging environmental responsibility and sustainability. Instruction is highly engaging and collaborative, emphasizing hands-on learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving. By amplifying student voice and choice, we empower children to take ownership of their education, build confidence, and discover their unique strengths. At ADS, we don’t just teach—we inspire and nurture students to become compassionate, engaged global citizens.
